Sanyo Semiconductor has announced the development of a 17×7 dot matrix LED driver IC “LV5230BG†for mobile phone lighting, and will begin sampling. The 17×7 dot matrix is ​​recommended for LED clock display of mobile phones. The IC integrates a 17-channel drive p-channel drive circuit for the column (positive) and a 7-channel drive n-channel drive circuit for the column (Row, negative). Mass production will begin in May 2010, with a production scale of 1 million per month.
The IC can supply an LED with a maximum current of 25mA. The company said, "The brightness is sufficient for lighting purposes." The number of gray levels that can be displayed is 64, and the maximum number of gray levels that can be displayed at the same time is 8. The gray scale can be displayed by changing the duty ratio (PWMDUTY value) of the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal. The display grayscale of each LED can be set using a function called "Palette". The color palette is numbered from 1 to 7, and seven gray scales can be selected from the displayed 64 gray scales, and the PWMDUTY value supporting each gray scale is assigned to each palette number. Moreover, it is also possible to drive the LEDs with a desired gray scale by specifying a palette number on a frame memory composed of 17×7 supporting each LED. Moreover, the PWMDUTY value of another gray scale is zero, that is, black display is possible. The company said, "Import palette function to minimize the required storage capacity without sacrificing color performance."
