In 2007, Shandong Electric Power Equipment Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Shandong Electrical Engineering Group, began to develop smart transformers. On October 31, 2011, the 220 kV smart transformer was successfully applied in Weifang Yiming Substation, the first smart substation in Shandong Province. At the same time, Changzhou Toshiba Transformer Co., Ltd., another company affiliated to Shandong Dianke Electric Group, has also made significant progress. It has successfully developed the first 220 kV smart transformer and the first 500 kV smart transformer in China, which have been applied in China. Overcome the new generation of intelligent variable technology problems

With the development of the power grid, the State Grid Corporation has proposed a plan to build a new generation of smart substations, which put forward higher requirements for the performance of smart transformers. In December 2011, the company held two meetings on "Intelligent High Voltage Equipment Testing and Testing", clarifying that the transformer manufacturer must be responsible for the entire intelligent transformer (transformer body, sensors, and intelligent components) and possess the ability to test and test intelligent transformers. In May 2012, during the performance test of the 220 kV smart transformer, the project team members followed the test for 7 consecutive days, from equipment wiring, installation, configuration, commissioning to the final test, without any moment of relaxation. When the test results reached expectations, a smile appeared on everyone's face. Wang Xingang, the main designer of smart transformer R & D, said: "Only we know how much bitterness and perseverance are behind the success."

In May 2012, under the witness of experts from China Electric Power Research Institute, the one-time test of 220 kV new-generation smart transformer was successful. This is the first smart transformer certified by the State Grid Corporation of China. In July and December, two other products also passed the test, marking that Shandong Dianke Electric Group is fully capable of manufacturing and testing 220 kV and 110 kV smart transformers.
