ON Semiconductor's industrial communications and security solutions with smart grid and smart home trends

Today, global energy demand is increasing, accelerating the consumption of existing resources, and prompting governments to develop more aggressive energy-saving targets and stricter energy-efficiency standards, resulting in a series of positive impacts. For example, traditional low-efficiency incandescent lighting is accelerating the transition to LED lighting, the transition from traditional grid to smart grid ecosystem, the transition from traditional vehicles to electric/hybrid vehicles, and the increasing efficiency of energy-efficient power supplies and motor drives.

Take the smart grid as an example. It is a fully automated distributed power supply system (from power generation to power consumption), integrated with two-way communication smart meters and information technology to improve energy efficiency and sustainable power services. Smart grids cover multiple levels of power, communications, and applications, including home area network (HAN), neighbor network (NAN), and wide area network (WAN). The deployment of two-way communication smart meters will help drive the growth of the HAN-based smart home market. Consumers value the convenience of task operations through smartphones and tablets. The trend in smart homes is to enable consumers to control smart appliances in their homes through these devices. Appliance manufacturers using smart technology can provide home energy management services for remote monitoring and operation. Consumers also need to recognize the significant power savings of smart appliances based on smart meters and utility floating charges.

As the world's leading semiconductor supplier, ON Semiconductor actively promotes energy-efficient innovation and provides multiple communication and security solutions for smart grids, smart homes, and intelligent building control applications.

1) Smart meter PLC communication scheme

In the smart grid, the two-way communication smart meter plays a key role. On the one hand, it helps the power organization to accurately understand the user's power consumption rules, and sets differentiated electricity prices for peak power or low valley power. On the other hand, users can also reasonably Adjust your electricity usage plan to optimize your electricity bills. The smart meter contains different functional modules. In addition to the power supply and metering module, it also involves the data storage function. It needs to use safe and reliable memory. In addition, the two-way real-time communication is an important feature of the smart grid, so the communication module is very important and needs to be selected. Communication methods and corresponding best solutions.

In the case of smart meters in the home or building to the data concentrator, for this segment of the network connection, they usually have low communication rate requirements, the most important consideration is to reduce costs. Common communication methods include wireless networks, or wired power line carriers (PLCs) or power line broadband (BPL). The specific communication method needs to consider the actual conditions of the power grids of various countries, and the practice of first piloting the country will also provide reference.

As far as ON Semiconductor is concerned, we have established a long-standing collaborative and public partnership with several large European and Asian electricity meters and utilities to help us define and adapt device designs for specific end markets. We have deployed more than 5 million PLC devices in meter applications around the world, including the Linky Smart Meters project of France's EDF's French Power Distribution Company (ERDF) and the PLC-based smart streetlight solution from Shanghai Bund.

ON Semiconductor's PLC products and solutions include AMIS49587, NCN49597 and other modems, NCS5650 power amplifier, and NCN49599 system-on-chip (SoC) with integrated PLC modem and power amplifier. Among them, NCS5650 provides the highest PLC driving capability on the market, NCN49597 and NCN49599 provide important breakthroughs and solutions for subsequent products. ON Semiconductor's PLC modem family meets utility requirements and complies with IEC61334-5-1, providing interoperability between different vendors.

Taking NCN49599 as an example, this device provides an overall solution for narrowband PLC communication. The NCN49599 integrates a low-power 32-bit ARM Cortex M0 processor with a high-precision analog front end and Class AB power amplifier for lower cost, for smart meter/split meter, building automation, solar power, street lighting and industrial control applications. Based on dual 4,800 baud S-FSK channel technology, the NCN49599 offers the highest baud rate per channel on the market, optimizing energy efficiency and performance while providing excellent ruggedness and reliability. It includes programmable embedded software (32 kB) for field upgrades and the ability to embed customer-specific protocols and requirements. It offers off-the-shelf IEC61334-5-1 and custom PL110 (PHY+MAC+LLC) stacks to support multiple standards and applications. This device offers multi-carrier selection for higher speed and robustness. The NCN49599 supports the Cenelec A to D band programmable carrier frequency and supports a wider frequency band of 150 kHz for smart grid applications. This device contains 10 GPIOs and is easy to connect to peripherals such as LEDs, LCDs, and instrument ICs. It is available in a QFN56 8 x 8 mm package and supports a junction temperature range of -40 to +125 °C.
