Qualcomm to release AI-specific mobile chip

In response to the market AI trend, Qualcomm developed a so-called neural processing engine. This is a software development kit (SDK) that helps developers optimize their applications to run AI applications on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and 800 series processors. This means that if users are building applications that use AI (such as image recognition), they can integrate with Qualcomm's SDK and run faster on phones with compatible processors.

Qualcomm announced for the first time a year ago the introduction of a neural processing engine as part of the Zeroth platform. Since last September, it has been working with several partners to develop the SDK, and today it announced the opening of the SDK for everyone to use.

The company said that one of the first companies to integrate its SDK is Facebook, which is currently using it to accelerate enhanced real-world filters in its mobile applications. Qualcomm said that by using a neural processing engine, Facebook's filter speed is five times faster than a general-purpose CPU implementation.

For Qualcomm, the next step in the neural processing engine is naturally hardware, namely the introduction of a dedicated AI mobile chip. We do not know when Qualcomm released this chip, but it will surely come.
