LED backlight TV share is rising steadily, price is still the key
Taiwan media reported that Peng Shuanglang, executive vice president of AUO, said recently that although upstream LED supply is relatively tight, they expect global LED backlight TV share to exceed 20% this year.
AUO's LED backlight panel shipments in the third quarter will account for 30% of its total TV panel, and will exceed 40% in the fourth quarter.
Peng Shuanglang pointed out that AUO's LED backlight shipments will reach 1 million units in the third quarter, and the price will increase to 1.2 million units in the fourth quarter. In the second quarter, global LED-backlit TVs accounted for 14% of total LCD TV shipments, and increased to 26-28% in the third quarter and over 30% in the fourth quarter.
Price is still a key factor affecting the popularity of LED-backlit TV. The current LED-backlit TV is 1.4-1.7 times the price of CCFL backlight, but this price gap will continue to shrink in the second half.
Peng Shuanglang believes that when the price gap between the two models is reduced to 1.2-1.3 times, the shipment of LED-backlit TV will usher in tremendous growth. And this possibility will happen next year, and the 2011 LED-backlit TV share is expected to reach 50%.
For LCD monitors, Peng Shuanglang said that LED-backlit panels will account for 22% of total display panel shipments, which will reach 30% in the third quarter and 50% in the fourth quarter. AUO may complete the display by 2012. The panel is fully upgraded with LED backlighting plans. .
