University of Utah: OLED's photoelectric conversion rate is only 25%

The latest research by scientists at the University of Utah shows that OLEDs achieve high luminous efficiency is not as easy as imagined. According to the study, the photoelectric conversion rate of OLED is only 25%.

Lupton said that this is the first time someone has done basic OLED quantum mechanics research, which is a tough job. OLEDs are an important luminescent material because they are cheaper and easier to manufacture than inorganic LEDs (including inorganic material components such as gallium, arsenic, and indium). The photoelectric conversion rate of inorganic LEDs can reach 47%-64%, but the excessive cost limits its development.

For a long time in the past, the industry generally believed that 25% is the upper limit of OLED efficiency, but in 2001, some physicists at the University of Utah published an article in Nature, saying that OLED efficiency is expected to reach 41%-63%.

However, new research suggests that the 25% upper limit may be correct, at least for organic polymers such as pure MEH-PPV, and perhaps for other materials. Perhaps the efficiency of organic semiconductor materials that "doped" other chemicals may reach above 25%, but Boehme still doubts this.

Where is the value of OLED?

However, Boehme does not deny the value of OLEDs. He believes that even though OLEDs are less efficient and shorter than LEDs, they cost less than LEDs. In addition, the biggest advantage of OLED is not the lighting itself, but the liquid crystal display (LCD) technology that replaces the current TV and computer screen. OLED is cheaper, can be made into flexible materials, has a wider viewing angle and color range, and is more energy efficient than LCD.
