How can we enhance the safety of living and working in Guangzhou? According to VR, Panyu District’s Personnel Service Bureau has introduced VR technology to conduct rental housing safety education, simulating security risks across various scenarios. Officers from Lai Sui have been conducting one-on-one training. Meanwhile, Tianhe District recently launched Guangzhou's first youth fire safety training base at Qianjie Street. This facility is open to the public, especially employees, offering free access and aiming to engage 30,000 people annually in public safety education and experience activities.
Introducing VR for Rental Housing Safety Education
With the rapid economic growth in Panyu District, a large number of migrant workers have settled here, with about 72.4% of them living in rented housing. Due to the high proportion of rural and urban village rentals, many buildings are self-constructed by local residents, resulting in inconsistent safety standards, facilities, and management.
“We want to move away from traditional safety education and offer more engaging and high-tech experiences,†said an official from the Panyu District Personnel Service Bureau. To improve rental housing management, they established the Guangzhou-Suizhou service experience hall, where VR virtual security experiences were introduced. This innovative approach aims to raise awareness among employees about rental housing safety.
In the experience hall, personnel wear VR glasses and are immersed in a simulated rental house environment. Scenarios include the entrance, corridors, and individual units, each presenting unique security risks with voice guidance. Participants must identify all hazards, while company staff can watch the experience on a big screen and learn together.
VR-based fire safety education offers immersive experiences and incorporates game elements, making learning fun and interactive. This breaks the monotony of traditional safety education, encouraging employees to better understand rental housing safety.
Youth Fire Safety Training Base Opens
At Dongtai School in Tianhe District, part of the building is painted red, marking the location of the Qianjie Street Youth Fire Safety Training Base—the first of its kind in Guangzhou. The center integrates education, interaction, and hands-on experiences, featuring ten themed areas covering fire warnings, prevention, extinguishing, alarms, escape, and emergency response.
To cater to young learners, the center includes interactive exhibits like a fire sandbox, infrared fire extinguisher simulation, and VR games. These features aim to enhance students’ practical skills and awareness of fire safety.
According to a representative from Qianjie Street, the training base was completed in 2017 and now serves teenagers. It is open to the public, especially employees, free of charge during weekends and holidays. The center also organizes groups to reach 30,000 participants annually, promoting fire safety knowledge throughout the community.
Seven Key Points to Check if Your Rental Is Safe
1. A Fire Safety Manager Should Be Assigned
The building should have a designated fire safety manager who establishes and maintains a sound fire safety system.
2. Electric Vehicles Must Not Be Parked or Charged Inside
It is strictly prohibited to park or charge electric bikes in group rental buildings. Clear signage should be posted, and regular inspections conducted.
3. Unauthorized Wiring Is Prohibited
Electrical lines in group rentals must meet load requirements, and unauthorized wiring is not allowed.
4. Evacuation Routes Must Remain Unobstructed
Evacuation paths should be clear, with no obstacles such as bicycles or baby strollers. Emergency escape ports should be installed on windows and balconies.
5. Firefighting Equipment Must Be Installed
Each floor should have enough fire extinguishers, and buildings over 21 meters must have indoor hydrant systems. All areas should have smoke detectors.
6. Group Rentals Cannot Be Used for Other Purposes
Basements and semi-basements cannot be used for group rentals. They must not share a building with flammable or explosive materials.
7. Landlords and Tenants Must Clarify Fire Responsibilities
Landlords must maintain electrical systems and firefighting equipment, while tenants must follow fire safety rules and participate in training sessions.
