On October 11, 2017, the National Development and Reform Commission released a notice about organizing and implementing the “Internet Plus†initiative in 2018, along with artificial intelligence innovation development and digital economy pilot projects. The commission, together with relevant central organizations, invited applications for major projects under the “Internet +†and AI innovation programs. A list of proposed supported projects was published between December 27, 2017, and January 3, 2018. According to the official notice titled “Notice of the National Development and Reform Commission’s General Office on Organizing and Implementing the ‘Internet+’ in 2018, Artificial Intelligence Innovation Development, and Major Projects for Digital Economy Pilot Project (Development and Reform Commission Gao Ji [2017] No. 1668),†the High Technology Industry Department of the National Development and Reform Commission recently commissioned the China International Engineering Consulting Company to evaluate the submitted projects. Based on the assessment results, a list of supported projects was finalized and made public.
From the published list, it's clear that many leading AI companies have been selected for support. These include cloud technology projects, high-accuracy face recognition systems, Huawei's heterogeneous computing platform, and JD.com's open-source deep learning platform.
