US Army develops wearable flexible OLED display

Universal Display is a well-known developer of phosphorescent OLED displays and lighting technology. On October 20th, the company announced that it had received an extension of the Phase III contract for a Small Business Innovation Study (SBIR) awarded by the US Army. Under the $330,000 extension contract, Universal Display will continue to develop flexible OLED displays and deliver a flexible display prototype for metal foil on the US Army.

Wearable OLED display

General Display has partnered with LG Display of the United States and L-3 Display Systems of the United States to improve the design and performance of flexible active matrix OLED (AMOLED) display prototypes based on metal foil substrates. The US Department of Defense is currently evaluating the technology for military use, including a wristband-type light display that soldiers use in the wild. The extension contract includes the design and manufacture of a new prototype that uses an amorphous silicon backplane and a metal foil substrate designed by LG Display. The new prototype will also feature a phosphorescent OLED panel designed and manufactured by General Display. The OLED display will be housed in a thinner new housing designed and manufactured by L-3 Display Systems. This new casing is more filial and more durable than the earlier prototypes, and will have more flexible wearability and portability in future individual use.

According to a senior official of the General Display Company, the support of the US Army is indispensable in the development of flexible OLED displays. The three companies will continue to collaborate on the project to showcase lighter, more filial and more advanced flexible OLED displays for soldiers and similar customers.
