Qualcomm TD chip lags behind LTE field or will repeat the same mistakes

In the industry, many people hate Qualcomm.

As a successful mobile terminal chip manufacturer, due to the firm grasp of the right to speak and license the core technology of the chip, for many years, in addition to mobile phone manufacturers selling a GSM and CDMA mobile phone, they have to pay tribute to Qualcomm patent fees In addition, in the field of WCDMA and CDMA2000, Qualcomm is also a dominant company (It is reported that Qualcomm charges a $ 1 patent fee for each 3G mobile phone). That is to say, if the mobile phone manufacturer changes anyway, as long as it produces mobile phones of the above-mentioned standards, Qualcomm will "have a lot of money." For mobile phone manufacturers, the royalties paid to Qualcomm every year is a big expense.

But the savvy Qualcomm is miscalculated in TD.

Li Jinliang, a well-known TD expert, told the IT Business News reporter that Qualcomm is in an absolute monopoly on the supply of three global 3G WCDMA and CDMA2000 chips. However, because it did not realize the superiority of TD, it was not expected that the TD industry has a good The development trend of the company, and simply did not carry out the research and development of TD chips, so that Qualcomm lost the TD market in China's 3G due to its misjudgment of the situation.

BDA analyst Shan Chao also told the IT Business News reporter that as a world-renowned company, Qualcomm ’s R & D and innovation capabilities are obvious to all. It is not difficult to develop TD chips with its strength, but because it is not optimistic about the late start of TD-SCDMA, Qualcomm Did not participate in R & D for a long time.

In fact, TD's subsequent development exceeded the arrogant Qualcomm's expectations. The huge base of China Mobile users has allowed the number of TD users to grow faster than the other two 3G systems. Statistics show that as of the end of February this year, the number of TD users was 24.547 million; the number of CDMA2000 and WCDMA users were 14.76 million and 16.68 million, respectively.

Faced with this form, Qualcomm could not sit still. However, it is not developed independently, but adopts a mode of cooperation with domestic TD chip supplier Spreadtrum Communications (hereinafter referred to as "Spreadtrum").

Some media have reported that Qualcomm and Spreadtrum reached a cooperation in jointly developing TD chips at the end of 2009.

A person familiar with the matter said, "Actually, Qualcomm had contacted Spreadtrum as early as 2008 and had plans to acquire Spreadtrum. But then it may not be seen that TD has a large business prospect, so it gave up."

Wang Yang, research director of iSuppli China, told IT Business News that currently Spreadtrum and T3G are at the forefront of the domestic TD chip market. But Qualcomm does not actually have much technology accumulation in the field of TD-SCDMA. Wang Yang believes that in the global market of Qualcomm, TD occupies a relatively small amount compared to the other two 3G systems, so Qualcomm will not invest too much resources to focus on TD. Choosing cooperation in China is a shortcut.

In an interview with an IT Business News reporter, Zeng Gaofei, editor-in-chief of the People ’s Finance and Economics and Education Department, believes that such cooperation is largely equivalent to buying off-the-shelf chips and becoming a distributor of Spreadtrum without his own right to speak. For Qualcomm, this is tantamount to giving others their future and destiny. And at present, domestic TD users have accounted for more than 40% of the total number of 3G users, Qualcomm has fallen behind in TD. Zeng Gaofei also revealed that the misstep in the domestic TD market is also one of the reasons why his former head of China Meng Pu left Qualcomm.

Some industry insiders also said that Qualcomm may launch a 3G chip supporting WCDMA and TD dual systems to meet the needs of the high-end market.

In an interview with IT Business News, Zhou Weifang, director of marketing at Spreadtrum, declined to comment on the cooperation between Qualcomm and Spreadtrum.

A Qualcomm person said in an interview with an IT Business News reporter that Qualcomm attaches great importance to TD-LTE terminals, and at this year's MWC, it has launched chips supporting TD-LTE data card terminals.

According to Qualcomm, the reason for its entry into TD-LTE is that because TD-LTE has spectrum, many telecom operators around the world will use it. The difference between TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA is that the latter is used by only one operator, and the former will be adopted by a large number of operators. Wang Yang analyzed that Qualcomm's entry into TD was to deploy TD-LTE.

But Zeng Gaofei believes that because TD-LTE is developed from TD-SCDMA, Qualcomm will lag behind some other TD chip manufacturers in the research and development of the former. If this situation continues, in the future Qualcomm's unique situation will be broken.

Li Jinliang told IT Business News that Qualcomm may never have thought that TD-LTE could become an international standard for 4G mobile communication technology. At the same time, because its CDMA2000 system, which has always played a leading role in the US market, has not become a 4G standard; therefore, Qualcomm not only lags behind in the research and development of TD-LTE chips, but also in the entire 4G chip development, Qualcomm is losing its "leader" status.
