Under the global expansion of IoT, 28 mobile Internet of Things (IoT) solutions have already entered commercial use. Pang Ce, General Manager of GSMA China Strategic Cooperation, highlighted that China is currently the most dynamic market for NB-IoT application innovation. Looking ahead, he believes AI will play a crucial role in transforming the Internet of Things into a more intelligent and interconnected "Everything."
According to GSMA data from November 2017, 28 mobile IoT services were commercially available worldwide. Leading operators such as Vodafone, Telefonica, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, and others were positioned at the forefront of the 2017 Gartner M2M Service Provider Magic Quadrant. At the 2017 IoT Industry Summit in Shanghai, Pang Ce emphasized that China leads in NB-IoT innovation, with significant activity across various sectors.
As of November 2017, the global mobile IoT landscape included five LTE-M networks launched by operators like AT&T and Verizon, and 23 NB-IoT networks deployed by companies such as Vodafone, China Telecom, China Unicom, China Mobile, Korea Telecom, and Deutsche Telekom.
Gartner’s evaluation of M2M service providers considered both vision and execution capabilities, including market understanding, product strategy, sales execution, customer experience, and regionalization. Vodafone was recognized as a leader in this quadrant, demonstrating strong performance across multiple dimensions.
At the summit, it was also noted that Vodafone established its IoT business unit in 2009, now employing over 1,400 full-time staff globally. Recently, Vodafone launched a new consumer IoT series, including V-Auto, V-Bag, V-Camera, and V-Pet. The company expects the consumer electronics and smart home market to grow significantly, from 50 million to 370 million connected devices by 2020 in target markets.
Deutsche Telekom became the first telecom operator to announce an IoT tariff plan, launching its NB-IoT package in Germany on June 26, 2017. The package includes two options: one focusing solely on connectivity and another offering cloud-based device management and data analytics.
In the U.S., the growth of IoT connections has outpaced mobile phone user growth. According to Ponte, nearly 70% of new IoT users come from connected cars and other IoT applications, far exceeding the growth of mobile or tablet users.
AT&T leads in the U.S. IoT market with 34 million connected devices, including 14.6 million connected cars. Verizon is rolling out its All-in-One IoT platform, aiming for $100 million in revenue this year.
China remains the most active market for NB-IoT innovation, with developments in shared bikes, smart homes, industrial IoT, smart agriculture, and smart cities drawing global attention. GSMA is also advancing the 2017/18 IoT initiative, involving major operators like AT&T, T-Mobile, KDDI, Korea Telecom, Telefonica, Vodafone, and Orange. The project focuses on three key areas: mobile IoT, big data, and security.
Looking ahead, GSMA aims to drive the evolution from the Internet of Everything to the Wisdom of All Things through strategic initiatives in AI collaboration and IoT security.
