The weather has improved, and the smog has gradually cleared up. As a result, the air purifier industry, which once thrived on smog-related demand, is now entering the "post-smog" era. The question is: how can companies find new consumer needs and evolve into the 2.0 version of their products? To explore this, this article launches a series of in-depth reports analyzing the air purification industry from multiple angles—technology, materials, manufacturing, supply chain, and brand development. It also examines the current changes in the industry and explores its future direction.
Since winter began, many people in northern China have noticed a significant improvement in air quality. In previous years, after heating started, smog would often last for days or even weeks. However, this year, as of the time of writing, there hasn’t been a noticeable smog period in Beijing. People are expressing their joy at the sudden improvement in weather, and social media is full of posts about the blue skies. Yet, many are also wondering whether this good weather will last.
According to the "Comprehensive Management Action Plan for Air Pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region and Surrounding Areas during Autumn and Winter 2017–2018," by the end of October this year, the "2+26" cities were required to complete the transition from coal to clean energy, including gas and electricity replacements, aiming to eliminate over 3 million households using coal. Industry insiders believe that the promotion of the "coal-to-clean-energy" policy is the key reason behind the extension of the "blue sky schedule" in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
Looking ahead, with more environmental policies being implemented, smog days are expected to become even fewer. But what does this mean for household appliances like air purifiers? For years, air purifiers have been seen as the "private doctors" for smog, especially in China. With increasingly better weather, will people still need them? This article investigates the issue by speaking with industry experts.
**"Blue Sky" Equals "Good Air Quality"?**
To some extent, yes—but not always. According to monitoring data, the situation isn't as straightforward. In Beijing, between November 18 and December 17, the Air Quality Index (AQI) ranged from 23 to 193. Under Chinese standards, AQI above 115 is considered light pollution, meaning there were only 4 days of such conditions in that period. However, when we look at the stricter U.S. standards, where an AQI below 50 is considered good, the numbers change dramatically. Based on this, there were 15 days of air pollution, including 4 days of moderate pollution. So, while the sky may look clear, the air quality is still far from ideal.
**Is an Air Purifier Only Useful for Smog?**
Many consumers believe that without smog, air purifiers lose their purpose. But this isn't entirely true. Li Yang, an expert in the air purifier industry, explained that in foreign markets, where smog is less common, air purifiers serve other functions such as humidity control, allergen removal, ionization sterilization, and deodorization. Additionally, they play a role in reducing airborne viruses. While they don’t kill viruses directly, they filter particles that carry them, effectively reducing viral load in the air.
**Air Pollution Isn’t Just Smog**
While the documentary "Under the Dome" brought attention to smog, it also overshadowed other traditional pollutants. These include car exhaust, formaldehyde, toluene, and TVOCs from home renovations, as well as odors and secondhand smoke from waste. Li Jinsong, founder of 352 Air Purifier, emphasized that indoor air pollution comes from various sources, such as pollen, pet dander, and cooking fumes. As people become more health-conscious, air purifiers are becoming essential for every household.
Experts recommend that consumers follow the new national standard GB/T18801-2015 when purchasing air purifiers. They should look for products with high CADR (clean air delivery rate), high CCM (cumulative contaminant capacity), high energy efficiency, and low noise levels. Choosing higher-grade models ensures effective removal of most air pollutants in daily life. Even with improving outdoor air quality, indoor air remains a concern, and air purifiers continue to play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy living environment.
