In a major move to redefine the future of lighting, Philips Lighting (Amsterdam/European Stock Exchange: LIGHT) unveiled its groundbreaking Internet of Things (IoT) platform, Interact, at the 2018 Frankfurt Lighting Fair. This launch marked a significant step in the company’s transformation into a leading IoT-driven lighting solutions provider. The Interact platform is not just about smart lighting—it's a data-centric system that empowers businesses and consumers with intelligent, connected experiences.
One of the standout innovations introduced at the fair was the integration of LiFi technology into office lighting fixtures. This revolutionary visible light communication (LiFi) solution allows for high-speed internet connectivity through light, offering a secure and efficient alternative to traditional Wi-Fi. With data transfer speeds up to 30 Mbps, users can stream HD content and make video calls simultaneously—all while enjoying energy-efficient lighting.
Philips also showcased its range of smart connected lighting systems, including Interact-City, Interact-Office, and Interact-Retail, each tailored for specific environments. These systems provide a unified user experience, combining superior lighting quality with real-time data collection and analysis. Additionally, the new Interact-Industry solution is designed for industrial applications such as factories, warehouses, and logistics centers, further expanding the reach of smart lighting.
Another exciting development was the introduction of the Smart Fusion Pole in collaboration with American Tower Corporation. This innovative product combines high-quality LED street lighting with mobile signal transmission capabilities, enhancing both illumination and connectivity. The first deployment will take place in Huntington Beach, California, where 200 smart light poles will be installed to improve coverage and reduce energy consumption by up to 50%.
As Eric Rondolat, CEO of Philips Lighting, stated, "Light has become a smart language." Through the Interact platform, Philips is enabling a new era of intelligent, data-driven lighting that goes beyond mere illumination—delivering value through insights, efficiency, and connectivity. The company continues to lead the way in transforming how we interact with light in our daily lives.
