Electronic network report: In a recent quarterly earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk disclosed that approximately 63,000 customers canceled their orders for the Tesla Model 3 last year. Despite this drop, Musk emphasized that the number of cancellations is still relatively small compared to the overall demand. Since the Model 3 began shipping on July 28, the company has been receiving around 1,800 new orders per day.

The first 30 Model 3s were picked up by Tesla employees, while regular customers will start receiving their cars later this fall. Musk suggested that a high number of cancellations might not be entirely negative. He noted that Tesla could easily boost order numbers with minimal marketing efforts, but the company is now focusing on maintaining stability rather than chasing growth.

To put it in perspective, Musk compared the situation to a burger restaurant. If customers had to wait an hour and a half just to get a burger, would the owner want more people to order? Obviously not. According to data, if someone placed an order for a Model 3 at this time, they wouldn’t receive the car until the end of 2018.

Looking ahead, Tesla aims to produce 20,000 Model 3 units per month by December. Last week, the company held a factory ceremony at its Fremont, California plant. During the event, Musk openly admitted that the production process for the Model 3 has been extremely challenging — what he called “production hell.”
