Meiyi Lighting Research Center Announces Field Test Results of LED Street Lights

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Lighting Research Center (LRC) has released field test results for LED streetlights in a business park in the northern suburbs of New York. Field research not only confirmed the energy efficiency of LED street lamps, but also the results of the evaluation of LED street light sources by volunteers who participated in the survey were equal to or better than high-intensity discharge (HID) street lamps.

The study was conducted under the DELTA project at the Lighting Research Center, which was developed by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The DELTA project evaluated 16-inch BetaLED Edge LED streetlights installed on three curved streets around the new office building in North Greenbush, USA. The test fixture has a rated correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6000K and a rated color rendering index (CRI) of greater than 70.

Edge LED street lights integrate modular LED strips. The number of light bars installed in each fixture that meets lighting standards needs to match the required light output. The luminaires used for the DELTA test each contained three light bars with a mounting height of 30 feet and a spacing of 130-180 feet.

The purpose of the DELTA study is to test quantitative measurement system performance, photometric performance, energy conservation and light pollution compared to high pressure sodium lamps installed in the same business park. In addition, the DELTA project is also attended by volunteers who can participate in the evaluation of LED street lights.

Average survey results of LED streetlights attended by 26 volunteers

The power of each tested LED street light is 79W. Compared with the high pressure sodium lamp, the LED lamp consumes 38% of the power, which is lower than the high pressure sodium lamp. The DELTA test uses lighting analyst software to calculate the illumination of hundreds of feet of LED streetlights along the road. The analysis shows that the high pressure sodium lamp system lags behind the LED streetlight system in uniformity.

The DELTA test uses the outdoor spot lighting function (OSP) light pollution calculation technology (developed by the Lighting Research Center) to compare the two lamps. In terms of creating less light pollution, LED lamps are superior to high-pressure sodium lamps. But DELTA researchers attributed the difference between the two to high-pressure sodium lamps that are brighter than LED lamps, allowing better control of light at the test site.
