India pushes the lighting revolution LED bulbs to just 1 yuan

In January of this year, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an initiative to change India and light up the night.

The initiative calls for more use of LEDs by cities, roads and homes, with the goal of replacing traditional, more energy-intensive lights.

LED lamps consume about 80% less energy than incandescent bulbs and save power to ease the power gap. India's power deficit this year fell to 3.6%, the lowest in Indian history. In the new plan, the government also hopes to switch the street lights of 100 cities to LED lamps by May 2016. The Modi government has allocated a budget of 378 million US dollars for this plan.

Now, 10 months later, the program finally shows its effect.

It is reported that India's monthly output of LED lamps this year has increased 30 times to 30 million units compared with the same period of last year. The government believes that if all the 770 million incandescent bulbs sold in the Indian market are replaced with LED lights, the annual output will be reduced by 20,000. The megawatt load saves 100 billion kWh and reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 million tons. Compared with ordinary light bulbs, LED bulbs have a better shelf life and a 50 times longer life, which is 8 to 10 times more than compact fluorescent lamps.

However, LEDs are also more expensive. To solve this problem, power producers India National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) joint venture, Rural Electrification Corp, Power Grid Corp and EESL jointly established a joint venture, India Power Finance Corporation (Power Finance Corporation) ) to promote the implementation of energy efficiency projects. Through EESL, the government purchases LED bulbs through open tenders and then distributes them to consumers at a lower price. This has led to a large-scale decline in the market price of LED lamps.

With the increase in LED production over the past year, unit costs have also dropped significantly. The price of a 7-watt LED lamp is about $1.50 (100 rubles) compared to $9.8 a year ago.

Consumers have access to light bulbs, prepayments and shipping financing plans in two ways. For example, the total cost of obtaining LED bulbs from the Domestic High Efficiency Lighting Program (DELP) is between 100 and 105 rubles. If consumers want to purchase bulbs through financing, each LED bulb only needs to pay 10 rubles (about 1 yuan). The 95 rubles will be added to the electricity bill and deducted in 10 months.
