So what exactly is a flow battery? The flow battery can generate 0.795 watts per square centimeter of electricity, which is three times that of other thin-film battery design systems and 10 times that of ordinary lithium batteries. However, the reason for limiting the development of flow batteries is also obvious: there is usually a film in the battery to separate the electrolytes, and the two liquids are not mixed when they exchange ions. But the problem is that low-cost electrolytes have to erode expensive films, which has led to a significant reduction in battery life. So the best way to extend battery life is to remove the film directly.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has made outstanding contributions to the development of flow batteries. In order to keep the two liquids from mixing together, the researchers used a layer flow technique in liquid fluid dynamics to place them in a container. The storage of the electrolyte is separate from the battery itself, and the two tanks are respectively filled with electrolyte. This means that the size of the battery can be easily controlled, and the size of the battery can be changed by changing the size of the slot.

The nanoFLOWCELL system uses a larger battery compartment, which means a higher energy density, with a specific value of 600 watt-hours/kg. At 600V rated voltage and 50A rated current, the system can continuously output a maximum power of 30 kW. Compared to the lithium-ion battery technology that powers today's electric vehicles, the performance is four times higher, which means that its mileage is five times that of conventional components of the same weight. The company also stated that its flow battery can produce no significant memory effects after 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge.

"We don't just want to transform the car, but we also hope to use the flow battery in the fields of shipping, railway, aviation, etc. in the future," said a person from nanoFLOWCELL AG.
