Automatic Control Systems: An Overview
An automatic control system is a type of control mechanism that enables a process—whether industrial, mechanical, or otherwise—to operate according to a predefined procedure without the need for continuous human intervention. These systems are essential in achieving automation, allowing for consistent, efficient, and precise operation across various applications.
An automatic control system typically includes four key components: a controller, which processes input and makes decisions; a controlled object, which is the system or process being regulated; an actuator, which carries out the physical actions required to adjust the system; and a transmitter, which sends signals between different parts of the system.
Classification of Automatic Control Systems
There are multiple ways to categorize automatic control systems. One common method divides them into open-loop and closed-loop systems based on their control principles.
In an open-loop control system, the output is determined solely by the input, without any feedback. This means that the system cannot correct errors or respond to disturbances automatically. A specific type of open-loop system is the sequential control system, which operates based on timing logic. It is commonly used in manufacturing, material handling, and automation lines, where a set sequence of operations must be followed.
On the other hand, a closed-loop control system uses feedback to compare the actual output with the desired value. If there's a deviation, the system adjusts accordingly, resulting in better accuracy and disturbance rejection. Closed-loop systems can be further classified into three types: constant-value control systems, follow-up control systems, and program control systems.
A constant-value control system maintains a fixed target value, such as temperature, pressure, or speed, ensuring the output remains close to the desired level. Follow-up control systems, like radar tracking systems, adjust their output in real-time to match a changing reference. Program control systems, such as those found in CNC machines, follow a pre-set sequence of operations over time.

Automatic control systems are widely used across industries and daily life. In manufacturing, they regulate parameters like temperature, flow, and pressure. In agriculture, they help manage irrigation and machinery. Military applications include guidance systems, fire control, and servos. In aerospace, they support navigation, remote control, and simulation technologies.

As control theory and technology continue to evolve, the scope of automatic control systems is expanding into new domains, including medicine, ecology, economics, and more.
