Qualcomm Introduces New Opteron 845 Mobile VR Reference Design

Qualcomm announced on the eve of World Mobile Congress (MWC) a new virtual reality (VR) reference platform based on the powerful Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM 845 mobile platform.

Hugo Swart, Head of Virtual and Augmented Reality at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said: "Our customers are aiming to capture the growing industry opportunities for standalone and smartphone VR, so we continue to offer them new and advanced technologies. With the Dragon 845 mobile VR platform, we are supporting the next wave of smartphone VRs and standalone VR heads to help our customers and developers create immersive applications and future experiences."

The Snapdragon 845 mobile platform was first shown during the Snapdragon Technology Summit in December last year. It has several new architectures and subsystems designed to bring a unique experience that breaks the boundaries between reality and the virtual world. The Snapdragon 845 mobile VR platform will be based on the success of the SnapdragonTM 835 mobile VR platform, which is powered by a number of CES 2018-winning VR terminals. The close cooperation with Gore Co., Ltd. enables global manufacturers to quickly build commercial designs based on the Snapdragon 845 mobile VR platform.

Amit Singh, vice president of business and operations at Google's VR and AR, said: "Daydream has performed well on the Snapdragon 845. By using Qualcomm® HexagonTM DSP, we are able to achieve efficiencies and optimizations that are not possible on other platforms. 845, we believe we can deliver high quality VR experience with low latency, high frame rate and smooth head tracking performance for users."

The SnapdragonTM TM845 mobile platform features the latest Qualcomm® AdrenoTM 630 vision processing subsystem for outstanding integrated graphics, video and display processing. Compared with the Snapdragon 835 mobile platform, the above technology brings 30% image performance improvement, 30% energy efficiency ratio improvement, and more than 2 times the display interface data throughput. In addition, the new XR technology innovation "Adreno Vision Focus" introduced by it combines graphics rendering and eye tracking to understand where the user is looking. This technology is designed to focus the highest level of graphics resources on the user's gaze, providing the clearest visual effect.

Wang Chongqing, President of HTC vive China, said: "HTC has always provided the highest quality VR experience for the most sensitive users in the industry. By working with Qualcomm and utilizing our own software and hardware innovations, HTC is now using the high-end VR all-in-one Vive Focus Come to the ultimate VR experience."

In addition, the combination of six degrees of freedom (6DoF) and instant positioning and map construction (SLAM) technology enables the ability to track body and position in one space – Roomscale, without the need for cables or additional space sensors. It is able to move freely in the XR environment in which it is located, which is the first time this feature has been implemented on a mobile standalone terminal. This feature is primarily handled through the new dedicated Qualcomm® HexagonTM DSP and Adreno vision processing subsystem in the Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm Technologies' reference designs already support some of the first stand-alone VR terminals built by VR ecosystem leaders such as Google Daydream, Oculus and Vive.

Ash Jhaveri, vice president of business development for Facebook and Oculus, said: "The Snapdragon mobile VR platform has reached the ultimate level of performance and can meet the high computing needs of the stand-alone VR product category. Qualcomm's technology combined with Oculus' expertise has opened up for people. Bringing the best of the best independent VR."

Xtended Reality (XR) is a general term that includes VR and AR. In this emerging industry, Qualcomm Technologies has supported customers with more than 20 XR terminals, including stand-alone head-mounted devices and XR-enabled smartphones.
