Lattice pushes MachXO2 PLD reference design new interpretation of embedded features

Lattice Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: LSCC) today announced four new reference designs for the low-cost, low-power MachXO2TM family of programmable logic devices (PLDs). The new reference design simplifies and enhances the use of I2C, SPI, and user flash memory built into the Embedded Function Block (EFB) unique to MachXO2 devices. Five new demo sample designs and three updated application notes were also released, highlighting embedded flash-based embedded function blocks.

Since the MachXO2 family has been in production, hundreds of customers have leveraged EFB's built-in I2C, SPI and user flash capabilities to interface with microprocessors, microcontrollers, memory and other system peripherals for a wide range of I/O expansion and Bridging, data storage, configuration, and power sequencing applications. Now, the new reference design extends EFB's easy-to-use, off-the-shelf RTL code to enable the following functions, each with standard data and instruction interfaces:

I2C Slave (Lattice Reference Design Number RD1124)

SPI Slave (RD1125)

UFM access (RD1126)

Embedded Programming (RD1129)

All RTL code is annotated and parameterized so it can be easily changed to implement the user's design.

Five new demo designs implement the EFB reference design using Lattice's low-cost hardware development kit, including the MachXO2 Pico development kit, which is sold on a special basis. The system configuration is as follows:

I2C Master and I2C Slave (Lattice Demo Design, number UG55)

SPI Master and SPI Slave (UG56)

I2C & SPI Master (UG54) using C and LatTIceMico8TM microcontrollers

Programming via Wishbone bus interface (UG57)

Embedded programming via I2C (UG58)
