Reflective memory application in nuclear power plant equipment simulator

Nuclear power plant equipment simulators are among the most complex and rapidly evolving systems in the field of industrial simulation. These systems demand high-performance distributed computing capabilities, often spanning large distances. This necessitates real-time sharing of vast amounts of volatile data. As a result, many such applications have turned to reflective memory technology, which offers a simple, flexible, and highly efficient solution. Compared to traditional methods, reflective memory delivers ultra-low latency and high-resolution data transfer, significantly improving system speed and reliability. In Germany, approximately 2,000 trainees undergo rigorous professional training. They perform simulation operations on 13 integrated power station simulators, which replicate all possible scenarios, helping them gradually master technical operations. Reflective memory is used in these simulators to ensure accurate and fast data exchange between different components. Simulation training is a crucial part of developing and maintaining the long-term skills required by operators, while also meeting legal and safety standards. This plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of German nuclear power plants. The simulator is capable of managing up to 27,000 I/O points in real time. Three VME Intelligent I/O Controller (IIOC) systems are combined and connected via a VME fiber optic reflective memory interface to the VME data communication controller. The reflective memory interface transfers data to both the data communications controller and the IIOC at a rate of 170 megabytes per second. Each IIOC contains a processor and firmware that support I/O scanning, updating, loading, and real-time or offline diagnostics. The data communications controller communicates with the host system through the reflective memory interface. The system also supports parallel processing of I/O data and host computer input/output operations. Additionally, the IIOC reduces the workload on the host by handling many I/O-related tasks independently.
