Nuclear power plant equipment simulators are a prime example of complex and continuously expanding applications. These systems demand significant distributed computing power and often operate over long distances, which necessitates the real-time sharing of large volumes of volatile data. As a result, many of these applications have turned to reflective memory technology. This solution stands out for its simplicity, flexibility, and superior performance compared to traditional methods, offering low latency and high resolution that enhance both system speed and reliability.
In Germany, around 2,000 apprentices undergo professional training to become skilled operators. They perform simulation exercises on 13 integrated power station simulators, which cover all possible scenarios, helping them gradually gain a deep understanding of the technical operations involved. Reflective memory is used in these simulators to ensure seamless and fast data exchange. Simulation training plays a crucial role in developing and maintaining the long-term professional skills required by law, contributing significantly to the safe operation of German nuclear power plants.
The system can handle up to 27,000 I/O points in real time. Three VME Intelligent I/O Controller (IIOC) systems are interconnected via the VME fiber optic reflective memory interface, which connects to the VME data communication controller. The reflective memory interface transfers data to and from the data communications controller and the IIOC at a rate of 170 megabytes per second. Each IIOC is equipped with a processor and firmware that support I/O scanning, updating, loading, and both real-time and offline diagnostics. The data communications controller communicates with the host system through the same reflective memory interface.
The system also enables parallel processing of I/O data and host computer input/output operations. In addition, the IIOC helps reduce the workload on the host by handling many I/O-related tasks. This architecture ensures efficient and reliable performance, making it ideal for high-stakes environments like nuclear power plant simulations.
