Pan Jianwei's team's first intercontinental quantum communication was successfully completed

In the past year, the Pan Jianwei team from the University of Science and Technology of China has been leading global advancements in quantum communication. Their achievements include the completion of the world’s first quantum communication experimental satellite, the launch of the "Beijing-Shanghai Trunk Line"—the first quantum-secured communication network—and the realization of intercontinental quantum communication. These milestones mark a significant leap forward for the Chinese scientific community in this cutting-edge field. On January 19, the University of Science and Technology of China released more detailed information about the first intercontinental quantum communication. Using the "Micius" satellite, quantum-secured communication was successfully established between China and Austria, spanning 7,600 kilometers. This achievement highlights the growing capabilities of China's quantum infrastructure on the global stage. During the test, a 5.34kB image of "Micius" was sent from Beijing to Vienna, while a 4.9kB image of Schrödinger was transmitted back from Vienna to Beijing. The communication used an 80kbit quantum key for one-time pad encryption, ensuring absolute security. This experiment was conducted in collaboration with Professor Anton Zeilinger from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, further strengthening international cooperation in quantum research. The "Micius" satellite was deployed at the Xinglong ground station near Beijing and the Graz ground station near Vienna. Each station generated its own quantum key, and through commands from the ground, the satellite performed a bitwise XOR operation on the two keys before sending the result to one of the stations. This process effectively created a secure quantum key over a distance of 7,600 km. Additionally, the Chinese Academy of Sciences held an intercontinental quantum-secured video conference with the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The session used a 128-bit advanced encryption standard, with a 128-bit seed key table refreshed every second. The 75-minute call transmitted approximately 2 GB of data, and both sides exchanged a 560-kbit quantum key, demonstrating the practical application of quantum communication technology. Unlike traditional public-key cryptosystems, which rely on mathematical complexity and can theoretically be broken, quantum key distribution (QKD) is the only method that has been mathematically proven to be unconditionally secure. By leveraging quantum superposition and the no-cloning theorem, any attempt at eavesdropping would disrupt the system, making it highly resistant to cyber threats. After over a decade of experimental work, Pan Jianwei’s team has significantly extended the range of quantum entanglement distribution, from just a few kilometers to 404 kilometers. This breakthrough enables point-to-point fiber-based quantum key distribution over long distances, meeting the needs of city-to-city quantum communication. However, challenges remain due to signal loss in fiber or free-space transmission, limiting quantum communication to hundreds of kilometers. To overcome this, the use of a "quantum satellite link" offers a promising solution. When photons travel between the ground and the satellite, they mostly pass through vacuum, resulting in minimal loss and decoherence. In August 2016, the Pan Jianwei team launched the world’s first quantum communication satellite, "Micius," into a 500-kilometer low-Earth orbit. Five ground stations across China were set up for experiments, located in Hebei’s Xinglong, Xinjiang’s Nanshan, Qinghai’s Delingha, Yunnan’s Lijiang, and Tibet’s Ali. These stations play a crucial role in establishing a nationwide quantum communication network. In 2017, the team announced that "Micius" successfully completed three major scientific objectives within a single year: over 1,200 kilometers of satellite-based quantum key distribution, 1,200 kilometers of star-to-earth quantum entanglement distribution and Bell state measurement, and quantum teleportation between Earth and space. These achievements are foundational for building a global quantum communication network. The results showed that for quantum key distribution over 1,200 kilometers, the satellite link is more than 20 orders of magnitude more efficient than fiber optics. Today, the ground-based "Beijing-Shanghai Trunk Line" and the "Micius" satellite link in the sky have been integrated. By the end of September 2017, the world’s first quantum-secured communication trunk line, the "Beijing-Shanghai Main Line," was officially opened, stretching 2,000 kilometers through Jinan and Hefei. The Xinglong ground station connects multiple quantum communication sites in Beijing via fiber optics. Government agencies, banks, and insurance companies are already testing the quantum communication backbone network through real-world applications, signaling a new era in secure communication.
