Japan Nobel Prize winner Amano: Save 7% of electricity with LED lights

According to Japanese media reports, Amano, a professor at Nagoya University in Japan who won the Nobel Prize in Physics for the development of blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), delivered a speech at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on the 8th of this month. He pointed out that "converting lighting into LEDs by the end of 2020 can save 7% (Japan) domestic electricity consumption."

Japanese media said that Amano’s speech revealed his ambitions hidden in his mind when he conducted research in the 1980s with the award-winning professor of the famous city of Akasaka. He said: "At that time, it was determined that if successful, it would change the world."

On the same day, Amano also introduced the role of blue LEDs in energy conservation and sustainable development, and told them that they have overcome the lack of funds and have succeeded in the research and development process after many experiments failed. Later, he picked up a blue LED sample and said, "It has brought unexpected changes to people's lives."

Amano said that due to the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan’s “nuclear power plant outages and rising power generation costs” emphasized that “converting lighting into LEDs by the end of 2020 can save 7% of domestic electricity consumption”.

It is reported that this speech is part of the special session of the UNESCO Executive Board.
