Texas Instruments (TI) announced a highly reliable electrostatic discharge (ESD) solution that provides system-level ESD protection for eight high-speed differential lines to meet the needs of high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) and DisplayPort connectors. The straight-through, single-in-line pin mapping of the TPD8S009 optimizes the circuit board layout and improves the ability to resist bad electromagnetic interference. In addition, this unique architecture allows designers to easily add or remove devices without redesigning the system. This ESD solution improves the overall system reliability of devices such as laptops or desktops, TVs or DVD players.
The TPD8S009 has the industry's lowest differential capacitance of less than 0.05 pF, which can achieve minimum differential signal distortion. The line capacitance of each data line is 0.8 pF, enabling the device to achieve higher data rates suitable for high-speed video applications, supporting HDMI 1.3 and DisplayPort with data rates up to 2.7 Gbps. This product is a compact solution specifically for small devices and is packaged in a small 6.5 mm x 2.5 mm SON-15 package.
Other important features include:
• Conforms to the IEC 61000-4-2 (level 4) system-level ESD standard;
• Supports industrial temperature range between -40˚C and 85˚C;
• 2.5A peak pulse current (8 / 20μs pulse);
• Supports DisplayPort and HDMI connectors with a pitch of 0.5 mm to ensure seamless routing and minimize line interference caused by ESD clamping.
TPD8S009 is optimized to work with TI's serial video switch buffers for DisplayPort and HDMI, such as the SN75DP129 DisplayPort to HDMI converter and TMDS351 HDMI switch. TI's other ESD protection devices can support PC and consumer electronics applications. This ESD protection product series further enriches TI's wide range of interface products, including various series of products that meet different interface standards such as USB, 1394, RS-232, UART, and PCI-Express.
