The "SkyBender" project is testing the transceiver and UAV prototypes in the 28Ghz mm band. This band is shorter than the frequency band currently used by 4G technology, and the transmission speed can be 40 times higher than that of 4G LTE network.
However, the millimeter wave band has a big disadvantage, that is, the signal is attenuated in the atmosphere, and the propagation distance is only one tenth of that of 4G. It is a huge challenge to use the high-altitude drone to transmit the 5G network. Google is working on several potential solutions, such as high-tech antennas that use phased array radar technology.
For now, this is just a purely theoretical project.

The US Federal Communications Commission has approved Google to continue testing before July.
