DOE report estimates LED savings in niche markets

A new report says that a complete switch to LED lighting in twelve niche markets could save consumers $20 billion in electricity costs. Plus, DOE has released the latest SBIR funding call. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released analysis findings for niche markets Where LEDs compete with, or are poised to compete with, traditional lighting sources (eg, incandescent and fluorescent).
The report, available from the DOE's Solid State Lighting program website , provides estimates of current energy savings plus potential savings if these markets switched to LEDs overnight.
Twelve niche markets were analyzed, as follows: Colored-light applications:
Traffic signals and pedestrian crossings; decorative holiday lights; exit signs; electric signage Indoor white-light applications:
Recessed downlights; refrigerated display cases; retail displays; task lights; office undershelf lights; kitchen undercabinet lights Outdoor white-light applications:
Street and area lights; step, path, and porch lights LEDs in these markets are already saving consumers nearly $1 billion in electricity costs. If these markets switched to LEDs overnight, energy savings would be the equivalent of taking 16 million residential households off the grid And could save consumers more than $20 billion in electricity costs.
Funding opportunity for 2009 SBIR Phase I projects
The DOE has released the 2009 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I funding opportunity, which includes topics related to solid-state lighting (SSL).
The SBIR program seeks to increase the participation of small businesses in federal research and development. Phase I projects evaluate the scientific or technical merit and feasibility of ideas with commercial potential.
The 2009 SBIR topic area related to SSL has four main areas of interest ?C two focusing on SSL products and two on SSL core technologies: SSL products for general illumination applications "Off-grid" SSL products (ideas that completely remove electric loads from the Grid by pairing SSL devices with photovoltaic or other renewable sources) Core technology for LEDs Core technology for OLEDs Proposals are due November 20, 2008, and grants will be made in FY09.
