New battery with water to generate electricity: 10 times more battery life

The batteries that we usually touch, whether alkaline or lithium-ion, will be marked “away from water and humid environment” in a conspicuous position to avoid battery performance degradation or even short circuit.

However, R&D personnel from foreign technology company Open Water Power have to go against common sense and successfully invented a battery that uses water to generate electricity for underwater UAV equipment.

New battery with water to generate electricity: 10 times more battery life

According to reports, this strange battery uses aluminum alloy to react with seawater to generate electricity. When seawater flows into the aluminum alloy component of the battery, it separates into hydroxide ions and hydrogen; the hydroxide ions interact with the aluminum anode to form aluminum hydroxide and release electrons; when the electrons return to the aluminum alloy component, energy is released. Transfer to the circuit, which in turn powers the water drone.

According to Open Water Power, aluminum water batteries are 10 times more powerful than conventional batteries, enough to cover a range of 1,000 miles. In addition, the aluminum alloy is low in cost and can be replaced at will even if it is damaged by seawater corrosion; the aluminum hydroxide and hydrogen discharged during the electricity generation process are harmless waste and will not pollute the environment.
