Recently, the China Electronics Standardization Institute affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the 2016 White Paper on Virtual Reality Industry Development.

The report pointed out that China's VR industry has great potential, but there are still many problems. The problems mainly include the limitations of software and hardware technologies, limited application fields, and unsatisfactory results.

Hardware technology limitations

At present, hardware technology has problems such as inconvenience and poor results. The processing speed of hardware cannot meet the requirement of processing large amounts of data in real time in the virtual world.

The cost of related equipment is high: the investment in building the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) system has reached more than 1 million; a helmet-mounted display plus a host cost of 10,000 yuan.

Poor software availability

At present, most VR software has the problems of strong professional language, poor generality, and poor usability. Due to hardware limitations, VR software development is costly and limited.

In addition, related algorithms and theories are not yet mature. In the new sensing mechanism, collection and physical modeling methods, high-speed graphics image processing, artificial intelligence and other fields, there are many problems that need to be resolved. The three-dimensional modeling technology needs to be further improved; big data fusion processing (such as data compression) needs further integration.

Limited application area

At this stage, VR technology is mainly applied in the military field and scientific research in universities. It is still far from adequate in education and industrial applications. In the future, efforts should be made to play a role in different industries in the consumer-level field.

The effect is not ideal

In order to have a very good sense of immersion, the virtual environment created needs to meet people's understanding and experience, such as physical sense of reality, sense of time, sense of reality, and so on.

The representation of the virtual world screen focuses on geometric representations and lacks realistic physical and behavioral models.

In terms of perception in the virtual world, there are many researches on visual synthesis, less attention on hearing and touch (force perception), lack of realism and real-time, and devices based on smell and taste are not yet mature and commercialized.

In the interaction with the virtual world, natural interaction is not enough, and the effect on artificial intelligence such as speech recognition is not satisfactory.

The report mentioned that Chinaâ€™s virtual reality industry is currently on the eve of its eruption and is about to enter the window of sustained high-speed development. In the report, the Ministry of Industry and give advice, our country should plan in advance to do the layout of the top-level design, promote industrialization and industrial applications, strengthen the culture and brand building.

According to third-party data, the market size of China's VR industry is expected to reach 5.66 billion yuan in 2016, and will exceed 55 billion yuan in 2020.
