The connector is adapting to high speed communication

The frequency / transmission speed has increased very fast over the past 10 years . The speed has increased from 0.1 Gbps to more than 10 Gbps , and is growing at a higher speed. ERNI (Ernie) Singapore's marketing manager Xu Yongfeng March during the Munich Shanghai Electronics Show, said: "In the fast frequency growth conditions, connector solutions also continued to emerge."

If the transfer speed is around 1Gbps , you can also use a 2mm hard metric connector; if you are using 2.5Gbps , the connector can also use a differentially shielded 2mm product; but if you transfer to 5Gbps , you need a special 2mm hard metric pressure. Connected connectors; if you want to go to 10Gbps , you need to use solutions such as ERNI 's ERmet 0XT or fiber backplane; 40Gbps requires fiber solutions ( Figure 1) .

5Gbps connection solution

It is more popular when the speed is 5Gbps , the length of the cable is 600mm , and the PCB material is FR4 . In such high-speed circuit integration, the effects of the connector cannot be underestimated. It can be seen from the eye diagram that if the signal is transmitted through the medium, the maximum eye opening can reach about 46% ; if transmitted through the medium and the two connectors, the entire eye opening is only 13% .

It can be seen that the connector becomes a bottleneck for high-speed design at 5 Gbps . The frequency response, impedance, crosstalk, time lag, propagation delay, etc. of the connector are fixed factors; the variable factor is: the material of the PCB board can be considered to use low loss media, in the design of PCB through hole alternative embodiments (Alternate) of the drill holes, may also be coupled differential traces.

From the connector to the interface of the PCB , the user can consider the routing, the effect of the stubbing , the noise of the footprint , and the shape of the anti-pad and the trace must be increased.

All of the above are considerations for passive components. If it is necessary to further increase the speed of data transfer, and the length of the trace is required to be long, it is conceivable to increase the speed or distance by using an active device of the semiconductor, for example, an equalization method, a pre-amplification method or an encoding method can be used.

From the customer's point of view, there are also many requirements for high-speed connectors, such as differential high-speed performance; excellent pins and simple traces; and strong bonding is also desired; while achieving efficient production to reduce costs, and many more.
