Samsung Developers Conference: Halted VR Camera and Robot Highlights

At the Samsung Developers Conference, some new and cool devices unveiled. These products are just prototypes and will not really be sold.

For example, Samsung demonstrated a robot that can perceive emotions and can control the light switch with sound. This machine is only a reference design. Samsung hopes to use it to convince customers to use Artik chips to develop products. As for Samsung itself, it will not really sell robots. .

In addition to the robots, Samsung also displayed some interesting devices such as a VR camera worn around the neck and a communication device that can be attached to the helmet. These assortment of prototype products all come from employees of the Samsung Creative Lab. Samsung allows employees to form teams and develop products of interest.

Chaehyun Yoo, head of Samsung Creativity & Innovation Center, told the media: “Employees have some amazing ideas. Although it is of little value to our department, we still don’t want these ideas to disappear.” For this purpose, Samsung established an innovation lab three years ago to help employees develop products of interest to them.

The following products are all from the Innovation Lab:

The VR camera AMe can be worn on the neck and can record 360-degree video while moving. The collar is divided into several colors including black, white and rose gold. According to Ame team member and product designer Jade Minchul, AMe can be used by extreme sports enthusiasts, such as skiing. It can also be used in leisure activities such as partying. The ultimate goal of AMe is to record 360 degrees of 4K video. The entire product weighs less than 350 grams. Has the Samsung team reached its goal? Not yet, they have 2 months to continue to improve. AMe does not become a product sale.

Ahead is a wearable device that can be attached to a helmet. Any helmet can be used. You can use it to listen to music, make calls and receive calls, and you can also amplify voice announcements. The Ahead Prototype device is implanted with specific technology that can send sound directly into the helmet so that sound is not leaked out as much as possible. When the wearer uses the device, people next to the device will not hear music and dialogue.

When we watch video with a VR helmet, wearing an Entrim 4D+ headset can make the experience more vivid. For example, we can not only see the car making a sharp turn, but also feel that it is moving. The Entrim 4D+ headphones transmit electronic signals directly to the nerves in the ear and can adjust balance and movement. The brain will develop an illusion that the user is moving. In fact, Samsung has released the Entrim 4D+ headset at the South by Southwest Music Festival last month. The Samsung team has improved the headset over the past month. The previous product was able to sense left-to-right movements and now has increased forward and backward movements and rotations.

Samsung not only pays attention to hardware, but also cares about software. At the developer conference, Samsung demonstrated ItsyWatch software, which can be used with round Gear S2 watches. This software is targeted at children and can help them develop good habits. ItsyWatch software is similar to the Tamagotchi virtual pet, except that it has a built-in cartoon character instead of a virtual pet. The child can control the character to run the program. The program will let the child complete some tasks, such as brushing teeth, exercising, keeping a healthy diet, and if the child completes the goal, the cartoon character will grow up.

There is also an APP program called LiCON that can use smart phone cameras to control various smart devices. If we want to control a networked light bulb, we only need to take a picture of the light bulb with the camera. The app will turn on the light bulb setting option. We can turn off the light and can set the operating mode for the light bulb in advance. We can also use the camera to take pictures of other devices and open the device's dedicated app directly. LiCON team members said that the goal of the product is to make it easier for users to control networked devices.
