Ericsson predicts that the number of IoT devices will exceed mobile phones in 2018

According to the latest research report from Ericsson, the number of smartphone users will exceed that of feature phones for the first time this year, but both will be surpassed by IoT devices in the next few years.

The company expects that by 2018, the number of sensors, appliances and machines connected to the Internet of Things will exceed that of mobile phones, becoming the largest category of connected devices. By 2021, nearly 16 billion of the world's 28 billion connected devices will be IoT devices, from smart cities, smart cars and smart homes to mobile health care and diagnostic devices.

Ericsson estimates that with the popularity of smart meters and the growing demand for connected cars, by 2021, the number of IoT devices in Western Europe alone will increase by 400%. The development of 5G networks will provide key functions for the Internet of Things starting in 2020.
