Cost reduction, technology upgrade, industrial robots will be popularized

Electronic enthusiasts have gradually improved their labor costs, and the development of artificial intelligence technology has enabled robots to upgrade in industrial production applications. According to the "Statistics of Industrial Robot Markets in the First Half of 2016" released by the China Robot Industry Alliance, 19,257 domestic robots were sold in the first half of 2016, an increase of 37.7% over the previous year, and the growth rate was 10.2 percentage points higher than the same period of the previous year. If the pre-research and development enterprises are put into production and the new enterprises enter the market, the actual sales volume will increase by 70.8% over the previous year. The development of the industrial robot industry is in an upward channel and has maintained a high growth rate for many years.

At the annual meeting of high-tech robots, Qu Daokui, chairman of Xinsong Robot, told the First Financial Reporter that the industry is currently at a critical stage of change. Under the premise of machine vision, tactile and force feedback technology, robots are in the industrial field. The application shifts from low-tech work such as handling to precision operating procedures in the production line.

"Now, the competitiveness and market space of traditional robots will be weakened. In the next 10 years, robots will enter the production and daily life in large quantities, and the products will be transformed from dispensable products to necessities." Qu Daokui Said.

Cost reduction

In 2015, the global sales of industrial robots was only about 250,000, which is still a large gap compared to the total sales of servers and PCs last year. Obviously, the robot industry is still in its infancy, and it needs to be greatly improved in terms of cost and ease of use in order to truly move into the mainstream market.

As a high-end intelligent equipment, robots have been used in many production lines, but they have not been able to get rid of the functional performance of machinery and equipment. Most industrial robots are engaged in low-tech work such as handling and sorting.

According to the "Statistics of Industrial Robot Markets in the First Half of 2016", compared with the previous year, domestic industrial robots have a wider application field, while 3C manufacturing and automobile manufacturing have the highest proportion of total domestic industrial robot sales. 30% and 12.6% respectively. 3C manufacturing industry accounted for nearly 20% increase over the same period last year.

"Application robots face major breakthroughs in technology. In the past, robots have not shaken off the functional performance of equipment, but they have played a role in icing on the job and have not become a necessity." Qu Daokui told reporters that industrial robots must be manufactured. The real problem of the industry is that it needs to adjust its supporting technology to adapt to the high-end precision work from the robot structure.

Technological breakthroughs such as machine vision and deep learning have helped robots to complete industrial upgrades while reducing the cost of robots.

The cost curve of the industry is declining. As robot manufacturers add many components from the electronics industry (such as cameras, processors and sensors), technological breakthroughs lead to lower component costs. According to ABB RoboTIcs, the installer portion of an industrial robot accounts for only one-third of the total cost of ownership (TCO). And ARK's investment estimates that the cost of industrial robots will fall by half in the next decade, falling to about $100,000. At the same time, the price of a new breed of robots that work with people is about $30,000.

As labor costs continue to rise, machine costs are reduced, and robots' advantages in functional technology are reflected in the era of high-volume applications.

Domestic and international gap

More powerful industrial robot R&D manufacturers are concentrated in China, and in recent years, domestic R&D strength is gradually increasing.

The Japanese robot market is relatively mature; South Korea's high-end technologies such as semiconductors, sensors, and automated production have laid the foundation for the rapid development of robots; Germany is at the leading level in the fields of human-computer interaction, machine vision, and machine interconnection.

Compared with the four international families, China has started late in the development of industrial robots, and has gradually shortened its international distance in technology.

In 2002, Xinsong formed a three-tiered technology innovation system based on the National Engineering Research Center of Robotics, the R&D Division of the company and the industry-university-research alliances formed by domestic and foreign dominant enterprises and research institutions. Technicians account for nearly 80% of the total number of companies, and annual R&D investment accounts for more than 12% of the company's total sales.

Qu Daokui told reporters that the gap between China's robot industry and the international market is mainly due to the uneven development of domestic industries, the large base of enterprises and the relatively large technological gap. "China as a latecomer country, the gap is in the aftermath. Chinese companies have only a decade or a few years of history. The latter involves brands and globalization. In many experiences, the gap is still relatively large."

Later, it also faces more opportunities to reduce the time for technology exploration and directly start from cutting-edge technology. "At present, the country is a time of great change. It is necessary to subvert the rules that have existed in the past, break the rules, and eliminate the accumulated experience of the past. If it is still a traditional robot, Chinese companies still have no chance. Now there are various new technologies. Appearance, as well as the popularity of robots, in addition to the industrial sector, as well as health, education, consumption, etc. will create a lot of new needs. This is our biggest opportunity." Qu Daokui said.
